15-01-2026: Paper on blue social cost of carbon featured on ABC News

Our paper, where we introduce the Social Cost of Carbon, has been featured on various news outlets, including ABC News.In this paper, we have factored damage to the ocean into the social cost of carbon for the first time and find that it nearly doubles the economic impact from climate change.

05-11-2025: TIDES model featured in Maritime ReDi Magazine

We present the TIDES model, a data-driven agent-based approach, to simulate maritime traffic flows. We showcase the use of the model by simulating the impacts of the USA-China tariffs on global shipping.

31-07-2025: World Bank report published 'Port Reform Toolkit'

The World Bank has launched its third version of the 'Port Reform Toolkit', the most comprehensive guide for implementing port reforms in low and middle-income countries. I have been one of the chapter editors for this publication, specifically the chapters on Port Governance, Environment Governance, Private sector participation and the Port-City Interface.

29-07-2025: ITF-OECD report published on strategic transport planning in South-East Asia and Central Asia

The final report of the SIPA project was published on 'Enhancing the connectivity, sustainability, and resilience of regional freight transport', with two regional focus areas: Central Asia and Southeast Asia. I contributed various pieces of work.

20-07-2025: PortWatch data featured in The Economist - Houthi rebels
15-07-2025: Jasper awarded NWO Veni grant

I was awarded a Veni grant of the Dutch Research Council (NWO) to investigate the spatial factors that influence the expansion of infrastructure networks such as drinking water, electricity, and roads in Sub-Saharan Africa. I will develop new models to support planners and policymakers in making better decisions about infrastructure expansions and policies.​

30-06-2025: Featured in Dutch Newspaper NRC on adaptation finance 

I was interviewed in the Dutch Newspaper NRC regarding our recent Science publication arguing for a rethinking in the way we appraise and prioritise climate finance.​

19-06-2025: New paper in Science Policy Forum

We published a new paper in Science's Policy Forum in which we argue that countries’ resilience to the impacts of climate change will not be noticeably enhanced unless the international adaptation finance community shifts its focus from the quantity of finance to its quality and risk-reducing impacts.​

12-06-2025: New report launch 'Towards UK Systemic Resilience to International Cascading Climate Risks: The Role of Infrastructure and Supply Chains'

We explore why the UK must reimagine resilience through a systemic lens. Drawing on new evidence and high-level policy roundtables, we argue for a strategic shift: from siloed domestic adaptation to globally integrated resilience planning.

11-06-2025: NWO grant for TASICI project

Together with researchers from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and The Hague University of Applied Sciences, we received a €1.2 million grant to develop innovative analytical tools and organisational frameworks to enable coordinated, cross-sectoral responses to climate adaptation, within close collaboration with key infrastructure operators. ​

My Op-Ed about the lack of strategic thinking when it comes the construction of new subsea cables, in spite of increasing sabotage events in European waters, was featured in the Dutch Newspaper NRC.

06-01-2025: New article in Nature Food on unequal access to global grain market

In this article, we explore access to international food markets, finding unequal access driven by trade and non-trade frictions. A new global cost analysis of the trade of grains highlights the importance of different cost components and their implications for exposure to price shocks and suggests strategies to improve market access.
